Am I the Right Photographer for You? (And Why I Might Not Be)

Hi, I am Sam. A documentary photographer based in Richmond, VA. My question is, are we a match?

Choosing a photographer is a little like choosing someone to tell your story. Not just how things looked, but how they felt. And the truth is — I’m not the right photographer for everyone. Honestly? I don’t want to be.

This post is here to help you decide if we’re aligned — before we ever step into golden light together.

Why I may Be a good Fit

I Crave Originality (Not Replication)

I absolutely look for inspiration — art, film, old photographs, the way light moves through a room — but I don’t chase all the trends or recreate the same images over and over.

What I crave is uniqueness.

Your photos shouldn’t look like anyone else’s. They should look like you — your dynamic, your energy, your rhythms. I’m far more interested in what makes your family or relationship different than fitting you into a pre-made mold.

If you’re looking for perfectly curated, Pinterest-exact recreations, I may not be your person.

I Love the Unperfect Photos

Not every image will be technically perfect.

Sometimes there’s motion blur. Sometimes someone’s eyes are closed. Sometimes the frame is a little wild — because life was happening too fast to slow it down.

I believe those images still matter.

They hold truth. Energy. Memory.

If you want every photo to be polished, posed, and flawless, my approach may feel uncomfortable.

I Care Deeply About the Small, Quiet Moments

The magic lives in the in-between.

The hand squeeze. The crooked smile. The way your kid tucks their head into your shoulder. The deep breath before a laugh. The moments that might seem insignificant — until one day they’re everything.

I intentionally photograph:

  • Small gestures
  • Fleeting expressions
  • Emotional pauses
  • The unplanned, unannounced moments

These are often the images my clients end up treasuring the most — even if they weren’t the ones they expected.

You Value Connection & Real Emotion Over Perfection

My goal when I photograph families is simple: connection over perfection.

I want your images to show the love you share, the way you laugh together, the way your kids melt into you without thinking twice. I’m not chasing perfectly stiff smiles or everyone looking directly at the camera at the same time — because those images rarely feel like anything.

When you look at a photo of a family dressed up, stiffly posed, and smiling on command, there’s often a disconnect. But when you see a family cuddled together, tickling, whispering, laughing, or just being close — that’s where emotion lives.

That’s what I photograph.

You Want a Fun, Laid‑Back, Stress‑Free Session

Sessions with me are meant to feel easy.

No pressure. No expectations to perform. No worrying about whether your kids are “behaving” or if everything looks perfect.

We move at your pace. We follow the energy of your family. If your kid needs a break, a snack, or a moment to reset — that’s part of the story.

For couples and weddings, the same approach applies. I want your session to feel like a date, a quiet walk, a shared laugh — not a list of posed shots. We focus on real interactions, natural moments, and the joy you share together, whether you’re tying the knot or just enjoying time together in front of the camera.

If you want a session that feels more like quality time than a photoshoot, we’re likely a great fit.

You Value Photography as Art

Some people don’t see the value in professional photography — and that’s okay. They’re happy with iPhone photos that live on their camera roll forever.

But if you value professional photography, you understand that images can be more than documentation.

They can be art.

While I’m photographing your family, I’m thinking about light, composition, movement, and emotion. I’m creating intentionally — not just taking pictures, but building images that hold feeling.

When you invest in professional photography, you’re investing in artwork that:

  • Captures the growth of your family
  • Preserves how this season felt
  • Brings you back to these moments years from now

These are the images that get printed, passed down, and cherished for generations — and they’re worth every bit of the investment.

Why I Might Not Be a Good Fit

I want to be honest — because honesty leads to better experiences for everyone.

I do not pose constantly, and I lean heavily into a true documentary style. That means:

  • Minimal direction
  • Very little “stand here, look here”
  • No forced smiles or stiff setups
  • You want to look like you’ve stepped out of the cover of Vogue in every single photo
  • You want someone directing every pose, expression, and movement

My work isn’t about perfection or performance. It’s about presence, connection, and real life as it unfolds.

If the idea of showing up to a session and not being told exactly what to do every moment feels stressful, that’s a sign we might not be aligned — and that’s okay. I’m not hands-off to the point of abandonment. I’ll gently guide when needed, offer prompts to spark interaction, and create space for moments to happen naturally.

If this approach feels right to you, I’d love to document your story.

What I Do Offer: Gentle Prompting

While I don’t pose, I do prompt.

Prompts are about interaction, not performance. I’ll guide you into moments — not positions.

Think:

  • Moving together
  • Talking, laughing, touching
  • Engaging with your kids
  • Existing the way you normally do

You don’t need to know how to “be photogenic.” You just need to be present.

Still Deciding? Think of It This Way

If you can:

  • Go on a date together
  • Play chase your kiddos
  • Take a walk and smell flowers
  • Wander and explore a park

  • Grab ice cream or coffee

…then you already know how to do a session with me. That’s all we’re doing.

No performance. No pretending. No pressure. I want real interactions — the kind that already exist in your life. I just step in to document them.
